HOW WE
GOT STARTED
Helping Others to Overcome (H2O) was founded by husband-and-wife Allen and Jacelyn Hunter in late 2023 after Allen's near-death experience of having a severe stroke. After surviving what the doctors said he should not have, Allen found himself unemployed, with no health insurance benefits, and fighting to get the help his body and family desperately needed. After finally getting approved for Harris Health services, Allen noticed that he was being scheduled for physical therapy, occupation therapy, and speech therapy, but nothing was being offered to specifically help his mental health, which was equally impacted by the changes that happened in his body, face, voice, and talents. He also took note of the transportation needs, food needs, and financial resources that were not available and that he and others in his situation vitally needed.
Out of that anguish, and encountering the anguish of others, H2O was birthed, and Allen was beyond sure that God wanted him to establish an organization that would help individuals and families with much-needed food resources, financial support, and mental health to ensure that families could recover together, and with lessened stress through sudden medical tragedies.
MAKING AN
IMPACT
Inspired by the Gospel Message: Helping Others To Overcome’s (H2O) vision is deeply rooted in the timeless Gospel message of love, hope, and empowerment. We draw inspiration from the teachings of Jesus Christ, whose life exemplified compassion, service, and a commitment to social justice. His message of love for all, regardless of background or status, serves as our guiding light. We believe in the transformative power of love to heal wounds, bridge divides, and create a community where everyone feels valued and accepted.
According to statistical data from the US Census Bureau, in 2021, 28 million individuals did not have health insurance. This means that there are millions of individuals who, by law, are required to get medical care to prevent death, but without health coverage, many individuals may be in jeopardy of not getting back to baseline operation due to not having access to rehabilitative measures. They are also expected to heal at home without expert medical support or supplies. And mental health services most often are not available to help prevent depression or even suicide. With an organization like H2O in operation, we close the door to bullying epidemics like homelessness, starvation, and crime. Helping Others To Overcome exists to ensure that we can be of help by assisting families to breathe through their tragedy more easily with compassionate, intentional, and focused efforts.
